Your PIN in Dixl

Your PIN protects the account information Dixl stores on its servers and lets you restore that information on a new device.

What the PIN protects

What it does not protect

Your PIN does not decrypt your message history — messages live on your devices. Backups are protected by a separate recovery key, not your PIN.

Create a PIN

Pick a PIN of at least 4 digits, or an alphanumeric code for more security, and enter it twice to confirm. Dixl asks for it periodically so you don’t forget it.

Change your PIN

Open Settings › Account › Change your PIN, enter your current PIN, then set a new one.

Registration Lock

Turn on Registration Lock in Settings › Account to require your PIN when re-registering your number on a new device. This stops someone who gets your SIM from taking over your number.

FAQ

What happens if I forget my PIN? If Registration Lock is off, you can re-register, but PIN-protected data (profile, server-side contacts, settings) is cleared after a waiting period. Keep your PIN somewhere safe.

Is the PIN the same as my backup recovery key? No. The PIN protects account data on the server; the 64-character recovery key decrypts your backups. They’re separate.

How often will Dixl ask for my PIN? Periodically, with the interval growing over time, so it stays memorized without nagging.

Can I use letters in my PIN? Yes — switch to an alphanumeric PIN for stronger protection.
