Recover your PIN
Your PIN protects the information linked to your account — profile, contacts, and settings stored on Dixl servers. If you forget it, you’ll need to wait through a cooldown before resetting.
What the PIN protects
- Your profile name and photo.
- Your contact list stored server-side (not the local phone contacts).
- Group memberships and preferences synced across devices.
The PIN does not decrypt your message history — that’s protected by your device and, for backups, by the recovery key.
Reset when you know the PIN
Open Settings › Account › Change your PIN, enter the current PIN, then a new one.
Forgot your PIN
After too many wrong attempts the PIN locks. You have two options:
- Wait 7 days, then register again on the same phone number. This wipes your profile and server-side data but leaves local messages intact.
- Tap Create new PIN on the locked screen — this also clears server-side data immediately and lets you continue.
Heads up: if Registration Lock is on, the 7-day cooldown can’t be skipped. Make sure you can wait that long before enabling it.
Disable the PIN (not recommended)
You can turn the PIN off at Settings › Account › Disable PIN. Without a PIN, you lose protection against someone else re-registering your phone number.
FAQ
Can Dixl reset my PIN for me? No — for security, only you can reset it, after the cooldown.
Will I lose my messages? No — local messages stay; only server-side data (profile, synced settings) is cleared on reset.
What does Registration Lock change? It requires your PIN to re-register your number and removes the option to skip the 7-day wait.
