Restore a backup in Dixl
When you reinstall Dixl or move to a new phone, you can bring your chats and media back from your most recent Secure Backup.
Before you start
- The phone number the backup was made from.
- Your 64-character recovery key.
- At least one complete backup on the old device.
Restore on Android or iOS
- Install Dixl on the new device.
- Enter your phone number and verify with SMS.
- When asked, choose Restore from backup.
- Enter your recovery key.
The app downloads and decrypts your backup. Media is restored in the background after setup finishes.
Moving between iPhone and Android
Direct device-to-device transfer only works between phones on the same platform. To move messages from iPhone to Android (or back), enable Secure Backups on the old phone first, then restore from backup on the new one.
Troubleshooting
- “Recovery key incorrect” — re-enter it carefully; it’s 64 characters with no spaces.
- “No backup found” — confirm the old device completed at least one backup in Settings › Chats › Backups.
- Slow restore — large media libraries can take hours. Text is restored first so you can message right away.
FAQ
Do I need my old phone to restore? No — you need the phone number and recovery key, plus an existing backup in the cloud.
Will restoring overwrite my new messages? Restore is done during setup, before you start using the account on the new device.
Why is media still loading after restore? Media downloads in the background after text; large libraries take longer.
