Transfer your account
Move your account and messages from one phone to another. There are two options: direct device-to-device transfer and backup restore.
Option 1 — Device-to-device transfer (same platform)
Works when both phones run the same OS (Android to Android, or iPhone to iPhone). Transfers everything, including recent media with no time limit.
- Install Dixl on the new phone and start setup.
- Choose Transfer from an existing device.
- Using the old phone, scan the QR code shown on the new phone.
- Keep both phones on the same Wi-Fi and next to each other until the transfer completes.
Option 2 — Backup restore (cross-platform)
Needed when switching between Android and iPhone. Requires Secure Backups on the old device.
- On the old device, make a fresh backup: Settings › Chats › Backups › Back up now. Note your recovery key.
- Install Dixl on the new device and sign in with the same phone number.
- Choose Restore from backup and enter the recovery key.
Pending transfer
If you started a transfer but didn’t finish, the old device shows a “Transfer in progress” banner. Open the app on the new device and complete the remaining steps; if it was interrupted, restart it from the old device.
Troubleshooting
- Both phones on Wi-Fi — the transfer needs the same network; cellular won’t work.
- Stuck at “Connecting” — some corporate or public Wi-Fi networks block peer-to-peer; try a phone hotspot.
- Media missing — if you used backup restore instead of direct transfer, only the last 30 days of media (the backup retention window) come across.
FAQ
Can I transfer between iPhone and Android directly? No — direct transfer is same-platform only. Use backup restore to switch platforms.
Does direct transfer keep all my media? Yes — device-to-device transfer has no media time limit; backup restore keeps the last 30 days.
What if the transfer is interrupted? Restart it from the old device, keeping both phones on the same Wi-Fi.
