Update Dixl on Android
Dixl checks for updates automatically in the background. When a newer version is available, you can also check manually.
How updates work
Dixl fetches a small manifest from our server every few hours to see if a newer APK is available. If it is, the app:
- Downloads the APK quietly in the background (by default only over Wi-Fi to save your mobile data).
- Verifies the file’s digital signature so you know it hasn’t been tampered with.
- Shows a banner on your chat list when the download is ready. You can also start the install from Settings at any time.
- Hands the install over to the Android system, which asks you to confirm with one tap.
Messages, chats, contacts, settings, and your PIN are preserved across every update.
Check for updates manually
- Open Dixl.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top right › Settings.
- Scroll to Help.
- Tap Check for updates.
You’ll see one of three outcomes:
- “You’re up to date” — your installed version is the latest we’ve published.
- “Update available” — a newer version is on the server. Tap Download; the app shows a progress bar as it downloads. When the download finishes, tap Install.
- “Couldn’t check for updates” — we couldn’t reach our update server. Check your internet connection and tap Retry.
The in-app update banner
If the app discovered a newer version during its background check, you’ll see a banner at the top of your chat list the next time you open Dixl:
Update available
Dixl Messenger X.Y.Z is ready to download.
[Update] [Later]
Tap Update to open the download/install sheet. Tap Later to postpone — the banner will return after a while.
The system “Install” dialog
When you tap Install, Android shows its own dialog asking you to confirm the install:
Do you want to install an update to this existing application? Your existing data will not be lost. It does not require any special access.
[Cancel] [Install]
Tap Install. The app closes briefly, then reopens on the new version. Chat history and settings are preserved.
First-time: allow installs from Dixl
The very first time you install an update this way, Android may ask you to grant Dixl permission to install apps. This is a one-time step:
- In the system dialog, tap Settings.
- Enable Allow from this source.
- Press the back button to return to Dixl — the install will continue.
On Android 14 and later this permission is stored per-app and per-installer. You may be asked to grant it again after certain system updates — it’s a single extra tap the next time you install an update.
Xiaomi MIUI / HyperOS
On Xiaomi devices, the first install may also show MIUI’s own security check. When it appears:
- Tap Continue to proceed past the MIUI security scan. The scan is quick — Dixl is signed by us and will pass.
- If MIUI asks you to disable MIUI Optimization for Dixl, you can leave it on — updates work fine either way.
- If a toggle asks about Install via USB, it does not affect in-app updates and can stay off.
Using mobile data
By default, the background update check downloads the APK only over Wi-Fi to save your mobile data. When you tap Check for updates manually, the download is allowed over mobile too — because you explicitly asked for it.
Free space required
An update APK is typically 80 MB. You need roughly twice that free at install time (the APK file plus temporary OS install staging). If you’re low on space, the download will pause with a “Not enough storage” message — free some space and tap Retry.
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I tap the update notification
Make sure you’re on version 2.0.34 or newer — earlier versions had a bug where the notification tap was blocked by Android’s background-activity restriction. Update to the latest by following the steps in Check for updates manually.
“Download failed”
Check your internet connection. Tap Retry. If it fails repeatedly, try again on Wi-Fi.
“Installation blocked” or “Can’t install”
This means the system has rejected the install. Common causes:
- Install permission not granted — the sheet has an Open settings button that takes you straight to the right screen. Enable Allow from this source.
- Signature mismatch — extremely unusual; only happens if someone sideloaded a differently-signed build on top of yours. Reinstall the APK from our website.
- MIUI security block — see MIUI above.
“Verification failed”
The downloaded file didn’t match the expected signature of the update. This is usually a corrupted download — tap Retry and the app will discard the old download and fetch a fresh copy.
The banner keeps coming back even though I said “Later”
The banner returns periodically to remind you about the available update. The only way to dismiss it permanently is to install the update. If you prefer to keep your current version, simply ignore the banner.
I’d rather install the APK manually
You can always download the current APK directly from our update page and install it yourself via your file manager. All your data will be preserved.
